My Incredible Nursing Journey with Dr. Bishop By Wendy

My incredible journey began 15 years ago when Dr. Bishop asked if I would like to help him establish a weight loss clinic. Having already worked with Dr. Bishop for several years, I knew his primary interest was in helping people become healthier. Our present health care system is mainly based on treating patients who already have medical issues rather than promoting healthy life styles and preventing disease. Treating medical issues means treating symptoms that are already there rather than examining the underlying causes. It is a band aid solution.
Dr. Bishop felt that one of the major ways to prevent disease was to promote good nutrition and weight loss. So many of our health issues result from being overweight. Hippocrates said "Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food”. The two of us opened "Dr. Bishop's Weight Management Clinic”. Dr. Bishop called it "weight management” as he felt that it was not just about losing weight but maintaining weight loss by living a healthy life style.
When we opened the clinic I felt I was really practicing nursing care with a focus on wellness rather than illness. I was promoting good health and making a difference in people's lives. My nursing education and experience have helped me to better understand how our bodies work and how proper eating and exercise contribute to our wellbeing. I have learned so much from all of you. I have learned it is not just about food, but a combination of mind and body. Often times we have the physical response of eating when we have pent up emotions and life challenges.
Over the years our clinic has grown. We have been lucky to recruit some amazing people to join our team. We, in turn, are fortunate to work with Dr. Bishop who believes in continuing education for his staff to help us all stay up to date with current nutritional research and recommendations.
At this time, my incredible journey is changing. I have decided to no longer work full time. I do hope to work some part time hours in the office covering for vacations, so it is not "good bye”. I would like to thank all of you that I have met along the way. Each and every one of you have touched my life. I hope I have made a difference in your lives in some small way and have helped you in your quest for good health.
I will miss you!

Wendy
