Learning from Lapses

2020-11-22T14:09:57-05:00November 22nd, 2020|Motivational Letters|

There was an excellent statement by Dr. Robert Schuller who said: “Success isn’t the opposite of failing. A runner may come in last, but if he beats his personal previous best record, he succeeds.” You see, many of us will consider ourselves failures at times because of subjects we failed at school, failing to make a team, previous “diet” failures etc. Failing means only that you were not as prepared as you could have been; so, keep trying because you are never a failure until you completely give up. A lot of my motivation comes from the efforts I see [...]

Choices

2020-11-13T13:26:40-05:00November 13th, 2020|Motivational Letters|

The choice to have or not have snacks or extra portions of food, comes down to giving in to our pleasure receptors, or suffering the pain of denying those receptors.  More often than not, the pleasure area of the brain wins. When I'm told "It’s hard", I couldn't agree more.  It is not easy (especially during these long dark evenings) to stop ourselves from gravitating to the fridge or cupboards, looking for some sort of snack. Even as I type this, my emotional mind is thinking about snacks.  Fortunately, I have a greater desire to try and finish this article [...]

How Do I Get Motivated?

2020-10-19T11:29:06-04:00October 19th, 2020|Motivational Letters|

There is a great quote by Anais Nin: "…and the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom." You see, there is no magic motivation pill to make us eat better, or exercise or de-stress. For most of us, it is exactly what Ms. Nin said; that we are uncomfortable where we are, and to stay there and do nothing is more difficult to our psyche than to work on changing habits which we know will create a sense of empowerment. Having said that, I also know, [...]

Choose Your Future Self

2020-05-22T20:53:34-04:00May 22nd, 2020|Motivational Letters|

Over the last few months, I’ve listened to many people tell me how they “just can’t stop snacking in the evening.” Or, they talk about how they “just can’t get back on track.” These are challenging times. Many have felt the burden of added stress.  All of us are on different boats in the same storm.  However, the comments above reflect choices being made. When people make comments like this, they have pre-determined that they are unable to stop snacking. When you choose to see yourself as incompetent or incapable, you will experience incompetence and incapability. When you choose to [...]

Mental Roadblocks

2020-05-08T14:18:39-04:00May 8th, 2020|Motivational Letters|

For many of us, this topic is hitting close to home during these uncertain times.  It is important to recognize the mental barriers we create in times of uncertainty, fear, anxiety or discomfort.  This idea started going through my mind as I contemplated going outside to walk. To tell the truth, I really did not want to go outside.  Even though I had been inside, in a small space, for most of the day, the thought of going out created a feeling of overwhelming fatigue. I recognized that the walk would likely give me energy to accomplish other things I’d [...]

We Are With You

2020-05-01T14:55:47-04:00May 1st, 2020|Uncategorized|

This week, Maureen has written her insights and advice about healthy living during the COVID-19 pandemic, see below.  We are inspired daily by our patients’ resilience and determination during these uncertain times.  Many of them have been feeling down, frustrated and out of sorts, as most of us have.  Yet, even changing one small thing can create a different outlook and sense of well-being.  I encourage you all to think of one thing to do this weekend that would make you feel good, whether it’s physical, mental, emotional, spiritual…anything that gives you a sense of purpose or accomplishment.  We are [...]

Be Strong

2020-04-24T10:07:34-04:00April 24th, 2020|Motivational Letters|

As time goes by, with no real light (yet-hopefully soon) at the end of the isolation tunnel, I find myself, and others starting to drift. We lose focus on ourselves. We begin to drift somewhat throughout the day; we move less and find our motivation wanes. In a way, when the isolation began, it was not enjoyable, but it was novel (excuse the viral pun). We did adapt and create a new routine. I found I was more focused on moving more, and keeping myself as busy as possible throughout the day. Unfortunately, I (and I am sure many others) [...]

Ideas from the Masters – Our Patients!

2020-04-17T12:41:10-04:00April 17th, 2020|Motivational Letters|

We are thinking of you all and hoping you are able to do a few things each day that ground you in health: physical, mental, nutritional, social…we may not hit each of these needs every single day, but focusing on one or two aspects will keep your body/mind healthier than it might otherwise be. Every day we get to hear about our patients’ coping strategies and how they are taking care of their health. I am so inspired by peoples’ strategies in their varying life situations; they’ve been able to find resolve and determination, in whatever capacity, to keep re-focusing [...]

Do something that brings you joy

2020-04-13T16:05:13-04:00April 13th, 2020|Events, Motivational Letters|

This week, I posted a video on our Facebook page which you can see using this link. I talk about doing something daily that brings you joy, whatever that may look like.  Especially now, during these uncertain times, it's important we make little things a priority that will keep us grounded and keep our perspectives positive; even if it's just for a few minutes a day. We are inspired daily by our patients and their continued strategies to keep healthy during this time. We are continuing to meet with patients via Medeo (virtual) or telephone for ongoing nutritional, motivational and [...]
