How Do I Get Motivated?

2020-10-19T11:29:06-04:00October 19th, 2020|Motivational Letters|

There is a great quote by Anais Nin: "…and the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom." You see, there is no magic motivation pill to make us eat better, or exercise or de-stress. For most of us, it is exactly what Ms. Nin said; that we are uncomfortable where we are, and to stay there and do nothing is more difficult to our psyche than to work on changing habits which we know will create a sense of empowerment. Having said that, I also know, [...]

Work Towards your Metabolic Health

2020-09-28T14:22:24-04:00September 28th, 2020|Motivational Letters|

I am hoping my role is to help people become healthier, and not just focused on the number on the scale; of course we become healthier as we lose weight, but we can also become healthier well before weight loss. What is metabolic health? It’s a combination of factors including: regular activity, proper sleep, decreasing stress and a nutritious diet.   As we focus on each of these factors, our immune health (think COVID) improves, inflammation reduces, we lower triglycerides  and increase good cholesterol, we lower blood pressure, reduce fat in the liver (a huge risk to our health),  and in [...]

Get Back in the Boat

2020-09-12T10:29:37-04:00September 12th, 2020|Uncategorized|

This week some people were discouraged with their perceived lack of progress. Others didn’t move much or have healthy food because of perceived “lack of time.” About 10 years ago, I started to learn how to use a ‘surf ski.’ This is an incredibly tippy watercraft, and in competition in the ocean you must jump in and paddle over 5-foot waves and around a course with turbulent water. Most of the first summer was spent just trying to stay inside the boat in flat water. I called it “the summer of a thousand falls.” This was very discouraging to say [...]

Move

2020-08-28T11:54:31-04:00August 28th, 2020|Motivational Letters|

Since the beginning of COVID it has been interesting to observe behaviours in myself and others. When everything began, we searched for some sort of exercise and to just get some exposure to sun (knowing natural vitamin D improved our immune function.) For me, I would do some simple push-ups and burpees throughout the day, along with an indoor kayak machine.  For others they might follow yoga or you tube exercise videos and ensure they got out for a ‘social distance’ walk. However, even as things open up, I find a lot of us have backed off somewhat in consistent [...]

Perspective and Self-Talk

2020-08-14T12:52:17-04:00August 14th, 2020|Motivational Letters|

I wanted to go back to a letter I wrote many years ago, as I’ve noticed so many patients falling into the spiral of negative self-talk through the Covid-19 pandemic and all the nuanced issues are stemming from it.  To elicit change and create motivation, we must first look at how we are speaking to ourselves.  From there, we can work on shifting our perspective and acting on the things that are important to us. We are our own worst critics. We are at our worst when it comes to diets and exercise. One of the problems is that we [...]

Learning from your Life

2020-07-17T10:49:40-04:00July 17th, 2020|Motivational Letters|

On a daily basis, I chat with people about setting goals. Some of these goals will be weight related, some will be exercise, and some will just be getting through the week trying to improve previously self-destructive habits. Since we have no external guarantee of success, how do we develop an inner sense that we can accomplish what we have set out to do? First: From the outset of each day, you must believe that you will eventually achieve your goals no matter what. Second: It’s important to realize, that, no matter what happens, you must also believe that there [...]

Tomorrow is a New Day

2020-06-29T16:07:07-04:00June 29th, 2020|Motivational Letters|

After a number of days of hit-and-miss when it came to choosing proper foods (I’m trying to think about health mainly, fat loss being a factor in that), I was pretty frustrated with my inconsistency. You must realize: I’m constantly listening to medical podcasts discussing the positive results of good nutrition on metabolic and immune health; nevertheless, what I was listening to, and my poor food choices were inconsistent. I desperately wanted to be eating and exercising for optimal health. Yes, I was in a funk. I was disappointed in myself; disappointed in my food choices, food timing, sleep, exercise [...]

Today’s Habits for Tomorrow’s Health

2020-06-14T13:55:12-04:00June 14th, 2020|Motivational Letters|

One of my personal questions is: if we could more accurately measure how our choices impact our health, would we change behaviours? If we knew specifically that what we were eating or snacking on was improving, or worsening, our immune system, accelerating the aging process, or increasing our risk of dementia, would we make different food choices? If we knew that a certain dose of exercise doubled our mitochondria, improved heart function and improved endurance, while it also improved anxiety and depression, would we make that dose of exercise a priority? If we knew that only getting 5 hours of [...]

Reflections

2020-05-29T09:38:15-04:00May 29th, 2020|Uncategorized|

Rarely do I like talking about my habits or frustrations with my eating; however, I wanted to share some of my personal reflections. Three years ago, I was diagnosed with prediabetes; a total surprise to me. I did not believe my doctor and the blood results, so had a nurse test me at the hospital. Yep, elevated blood sugars. This was quite a scare, so began home testing and being more vigilant with my intake of carbohydrates. The blood sugars gradually came under control, although my weight didn’t change that much Fast forward to this past year. Even with regular [...]

Health First

2020-05-15T15:30:36-04:00May 15th, 2020|Motivational Letters|

Not a day goes by where I don’t hear peoples’ experiences of unhealthy (meaning highly processed) food choices. Whether it is the isolation, the anxiety of the unknown timeline of all this, the frustration of not being able to be with friends or other family members; all these things are affecting our moods. This varies from boredom to anger to frank depression, which can lead to carb cravings and extra snacks. I get it. It is extremely hard to maintain good nutritional discipline when we are feeling down. It also is a difficult time to be thinking about weight loss. [...]
