Planning is Key for the Holidays

2020-12-18T14:10:25-05:00December 18th, 2020|Uncategorized|

If we attempt to eat ‘perfectly’ during the holidays we’re more likely to fall into that all-or-nothing trap, and overindulge without restraints after the first “mistake”.  By preplanning treats, you are less likely to feel a loss of control. Plan in advance how you will conduct yourself and what you will eat (not what you will NOT eat, since you must plan positively).  This will generate a feeling of self-control and self- confidence that will do wonders for self-esteem.  This is the best advice to counteract the feelings of helplessness and guilt that accompany impulse eating.  Your pre-planning should include [...]

Get Back in the Boat

2020-09-12T10:29:37-04:00September 12th, 2020|Uncategorized|

This week some people were discouraged with their perceived lack of progress. Others didn’t move much or have healthy food because of perceived “lack of time.” About 10 years ago, I started to learn how to use a ‘surf ski.’ This is an incredibly tippy watercraft, and in competition in the ocean you must jump in and paddle over 5-foot waves and around a course with turbulent water. Most of the first summer was spent just trying to stay inside the boat in flat water. I called it “the summer of a thousand falls.” This was very discouraging to say [...]

Exercise for Better Immunity, More Brain Power and Better Concentration

2020-06-05T21:41:08-04:00June 5th, 2020|Uncategorized|

All of us come up with excuses not to exercise or move our bodies.  Throughout this Pandemic, some people have found consistent exercise routines that fit their “new normal”; others, like myself, have struggled to find consistency with exercise and movement. I was trying to de-clutter old paperwork and came across lecture notes from a talk by John Ratey, a professor of psychiatry at Harvard’s continuing Medical Education Program. The title of one of his talks was “Exercise and the Brain.” If you ever have excuses not to exercise (like I do), then you might dwell on some of his [...]

Office Re-opening June 15

2020-06-05T21:47:20-04:00June 5th, 2020|Uncategorized|

We are excited to announce that our clinic will be re-opening the week of June 15, 2020, for anyone interested in coming for in-person appointments.  We will continue virtual and telephone appointments during this time as well.  Many patients have felt more comfortable having appointments from home, and these remote appointments allow for less commute time and less risk of exposure.  As of June 15th, our clinic will be offering either type of appointment (remote or in-person), for new patients, current patients, or returning patients.  We will have strict protocols in place to protect the safety of our staff and [...]

These delicious crispy fries are a great substitute for the potato version!  One of our clients passed this along, and said it turned out great.  Original recipe from: www.wholesomeyum.com.  Ingredients 2 medium zucchini ¾ cup grated parmesan cheese (or if you have the pre-grated, shake-bottle parmesan, that’s fine too!) 1 large egg ¼ tsp garlic powder (or garlic salt) ¼ tsp black pepper Directions Preheat oven to 425 degrees F (218 degrees C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. If you don’t have parchment paper, grease the pan so the fries don’t stick. Cut each zucchini in half lengthwise [...]

Reflections

2020-05-29T09:38:15-04:00May 29th, 2020|Uncategorized|

Rarely do I like talking about my habits or frustrations with my eating; however, I wanted to share some of my personal reflections. Three years ago, I was diagnosed with prediabetes; a total surprise to me. I did not believe my doctor and the blood results, so had a nurse test me at the hospital. Yep, elevated blood sugars. This was quite a scare, so began home testing and being more vigilant with my intake of carbohydrates. The blood sugars gradually came under control, although my weight didn’t change that much Fast forward to this past year. Even with regular [...]
