What is hunger?

2019-06-28T11:12:58-04:00June 28th, 2019|Motivational Letters|

I was listening to a tremendous podcast which is well worth listening to, where Dr. Peter Attia was interviewing Dr. Jason Fung. Part way through the podcast Dr. Attia was reflecting on how he feels during a 7 day fast (he does this for health, not for weight loss). He and Dr. Fung agree that there may be some true hunger on the second day, but really the hunger one feels is more psychological than physical. Dr. Attia felt that the hunger he felt on the fifth day of the fast was no worse than that he might feel after [...]

Why am I not losing weight?

2019-06-21T10:03:05-04:00June 21st, 2019|Motivational Letters|

This is a refrain we hear often. First off we must define ‘weight’. Is it just the number on the scale, or are you losing body fat and your shape is changing? This is a good thing, even if the scale does not move much. However, if it is true lack of progress, then we have to look at many factors. Most often, we are eating more than we think. There is often a disconnect between what we think we are eating, and the amounts of extra cream in our coffee or snacks that we tend to forget. Often, even [...]

It’s Only an Effort ‘til It Becomes a Routine

2019-06-14T12:04:27-04:00June 14th, 2019|Motivational Letters|

This was a quote from a website I was looking at, and the words rang true in my mind. When we embark on a weight loss journey everything seems an effort; from writing our food down to planning meals, to the worry of failing, and how we will handle unexpected events. Many times I have been told "it’s easy for you;" I'm never sure how anyone could even imagine that. Although one person may be a different size than another, it doesn't mean they don't think of food, or stop documenting their intake or have supposedly high metabolism to allow [...]

Saying NO

2019-06-07T08:40:21-04:00June 7th, 2019|Motivational Letters|

Today I was impressed with a gentleman who has been losing weight, and has been very diligent about not giving in to summertime temptations. He acknowledged the fact that denying himself ice cream and cupcakes at his son's birthday wasn't easy, but he realizes he must change habits otherwise he will re-gain his weight just as he has done on every other diet he has tried. However, it was the matter of fact, yet succinct, way in which he stated the obvious that intrigued me: "You know, it's really not hard to say to someone, ‘You go ahead and have [...]

Pressure to Eat

2019-05-31T12:48:33-04:00May 31st, 2019|Motivational Letters|

We are moving towards a season where there will be more invitations to eat. Whether you have company coming over or you're invited to a party, visiting with friends or relatives puts excessive pressure on you to eat more than you what you had planned. Remember that if you tend to feel pressure to eat more than planned, try to work out exactly what makes you feel this way. Are you concerned that people will be offended if you do no eat everything you are offered, or that you will draw attention to yourself if you do not eat as [...]

Cognitive? Physical? Emotional?

2019-05-24T09:15:24-04:00May 24th, 2019|Motivational Letters|

What aspect of self-improvement should we focus on? In point of fact, are they really separate entities or are they tightly intertwined, so much so that we cannot let any of these become less than another? Week by week, we tend to focus almost solely on the physical. What do I weigh? How did I eat? I didn’t exercise enough. How was my sleep? Everything becomes linear; we become only our physical selves rather than balancing other aspects of who we are. We cannot let our learning skills slide; it’s important that we continue to grow in knowledge, whether that [...]

Weight loss? Or health improvement?

2019-05-17T09:09:27-04:00May 17th, 2019|Motivational Letters|

I was reflecting on a number of people I’ve seen recently and over the years, who gave up exercise because ‘they didn’t see much weight loss.’ This baffles me. Exercise provides so many health benefits, yet because a person didn’t perceive weight loss, they stopped. Eating well provides so many health benefits, yet people only focus on the number on the scale, not the improved glucose levels, or improved mobility, and hopefully improved energy. As an extreme example, I saw a wonderful woman who has gone from 250 pounds down to 135 pounds over a few years, yet is frustrated [...]

Bracing Yourself against a Toxic Environment

2019-05-10T07:35:06-04:00May 10th, 2019|Motivational Letters|

People with weight problems face a difficult, even toxic environment. The temptation to eat is constant, powerful, and compelling. If you pause for a moment to think, you might be surprised by how we accept this without the slightest protest. Think of the number of fast food restaurants you can find within a 15 minute drive of your home. Most now have drive-thru windows, which make it easier and faster to get loads of calories and fat. Most now serve breakfast and some are open 24 hours. Nearly every service station has been closed and remodelled to contain a mini-market [...]

Keeping a Journal

2019-05-03T09:03:18-04:00May 3rd, 2019|Motivational Letters|

We emphasize the importance of journaling at all times. Mind you, if you are losing weight and seem to have a good grasp of size of portions, and the triggers that make you eat and have these under control, you may not need to journal regularly. However, if you are struggling or off track, journaling is the single most effective way to get your self back on track. Remember. There is no point in keeping a journal unless it is a genuine conversation with yourself - a confrontation, in which you can learn something about yourself. The most important first [...]

Keep Pushing

2019-04-26T10:25:49-04:00April 26th, 2019|Motivational Letters|

I was at swim practice the other day, and not swimming at the level I should be at. I was struggling to keep up and frustrated with my lack of aerobic and anaerobic power. I know I have not been training anywhere near what I need to be doing, nevertheless, my inner self expected more than I was capable of at that time. As I kept swimming I relaxed, realizing, like everything else we all do in life, it’s a process. If I would show up more regularly for practice, and train more frequently my expectations should manifest. This is [...]
